As far as my own family is concerned, the tradition was that "three brothers,strong working men, came from England, or Ireland, and settled at Carslogie March, (Cupar, Fife) in the 16th century, and it is from one of these that the family is descended". photos pending
Records show that there were indeed Inglises on the Carslogie estate, which belonged to the Clephane family, but I have found nothing to prove that they were my own. The claim was made in a handwritten manuscript of the family narrative by Charles Simson Inglis, of whom more later, in the mid 19th century. He also wrote that our unknown ancestor was "proprietor" of a small piece of land at Bondfield, Cupar. Perhaps records or documents were still in existence at the time Charles was writing, that have now been sadly lost. In fact land at Bondfield did indeed belong to the family, but from what time is not known today.  According to Charles the land at Bondfield was disponed by the Carslogie propritor on 16 Dec.1685, but no record has been found in the Sasines in the Scottish archives.  One of the descendants, eldest of the family, built a house on the land in 1815, and moved there in 1817.  On old maps it is clearly seen to be named Bondfield, but at some point in time it has taken the name from the farm round the corner on the main road, and is now known as Gilliesfaulds House.

Carslogie March - march meaning a boundary - was situated on the main road into Cupar from Perth, almost opposite Gilliesfaulds farm.  Nothing remains of a property that old but a few cottages can be found there, one still called Carslogie March, probably a later build and not necessarily on the same site. photo and map pending

JOHN MURRAY JOHNSTONE 1887-1958

JOHN MURRAY JOHNSTONE, known in adulthood as Murray, was the eldest of three sons born to Jeanie Murray and Thomas Thorburn Johnstone
He was born on 26 May 1887 in Cathcart, Glasgow, and died in 1958 at Edenhall Hospital, Inveresk, near Musselburgh, East Lothian.
He married Evelyn Georgina Wood, only daughter of Alexander Wood of Portknockie, Banff, and Jane Bell Frater, nee Purvis, of South Shirlds, County Durham, on 8 October 1919 in St Paul's Presbyterian Church, Harrogate, North Yorkshire photo pending

VERA EVELYN MURRAY JOHNSTONE 1921-1987

Murray served in WW1

Murray and Evelyn separated, and Murray was estranged from his daughter, who would never talk about him except to say he was an alcoholic. Another member of Evelyn's family says that he was a nice man, and it was Evelyn who took to drink.

JEMIMA MURRAY was born on 27 July 1845 in the parish of Newlands, the 6th and youngest child of William Murray and Agnes Dickson.
She died in Melrose, on 20 October 1903

She married JOHN FELL in Biggar,LKS, on 30 December 1870 John was born on 1 December 1847 in Lanark

JANET MURRAY 1843-1937

JANET MURRAY was born on 21 April 1843 at Broughton, Peeblesshire, 5th child of William Murray and Agnes Dickson.
She died in Juniper Green, now part of Edinburgh, on 30 December 1937.
She married JOHN HUNTER, a ploughman of Mid Calder, on 11 September 1863 at Romanno Cottage, Newlands, Peeblesshire.

AGNES DICKSON MURRAY 1840-1927

AGNES DICKSON MURRAY, named for her mother, was born on 20 November 1840, in the parish of Newlands, Peeblesshire, the 4th child, 2nd daughter, of William Murray and Agnes Dickson.
She died in 1927 at Broughton, Peeblesshire.

She married 1) James Laidlaw, a shepherd, on 5 February 1864 at Goldie's Mill,
He died about 1866

He became a farm steward and overseer, so probably moved from farm to farm for work.
In May 1829 William married AGNES DICKSON, at Culter, near Biggar in Lanarkshire.
Agnes was born at Oliver Riggs, in Peeblesshire in 1804.
